Changes to Part L1a of the Building Regulations

Changes to Part L1a will came into effect in October 2010, so it is worth bearing in mind the following requirements for new dwellings
  • 25% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to today's standards.
  • Party Wall is included in the calculations, and has a U-value attached
  • Swimming Pools are included
  • There is more emphasis on thermal bridging, and the use of accredited and calculated thermal bridges
  • SAP calculations must be submitted prior to ANY site works commencing
This will have big implications on insulation levels, air tightness and heating strategies. It will become more difficult to design a building which complies to these standards. It will be extremely difficult to design a compliant dwelling which uses electric panel/storage as the main source of heating.

At Eco-Cert, we have been working on some flagship projects nationwide, which already achieve a 25% reduction and make use of many new and LZC technologies. We can advise on the advantages and disadvantages of energy strategies including renewable energy sources and Low Carbon Technologies such as Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Thermal (Solar Water Heating), Ground Source Heat Pumps, Air Source Heat Pumps, Wind Turbines,  Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and Biomass.

We are well placed to assist you through this period of change as fully insured and accredited Code, SAP and SBEM assessors. Please feel free to contact us with any enquires you may have, and we would be happy to discuss your requirements.

For residential projects we also provide the Predicted Energy Assessment (PEA) at design stage in case the client wishes to market off plan.
